FAQs

What does the ASOSU House of Representatives do?

The ASOSU House of Representatives oversees student fee allocations that go towards departments such as Recreational sports, the Family Resource Center, Orange Media Network, the Human Service Resource Center, and more. ASOSU House Representatives are elected each year, and take on the role of introducing resolutions to various issues on campus.

What is the role of the Speaker of the House?

The role of the Speaker of the House is very broad, but overall the Speaker of the House is tasked with chairing the House of Representatives meetings, voting in cases where there is a tie, coordinating representative activities and orientations, and appointing members of the house to standing committees.

More importantly, the Speaker of the House ensures the integrity of the House of Representatives by holding elected officials accountable for attending weekly office hours and participating in required activities, appointing new representatives when there are vacancies in the house, establishing house projects, and ensuring the success of the House.

Currently, there is not a system in place that formally holds representatives accountable to their office hours. Until recently, there has not been a way to inform the general public about the passage or failure of any house bills or resolutions due to difficulties in updating the ASOSU website in a timely manner. The role of the Speaker of the House should be one that bridges the gap between other branches of student government, is actively working to improve accessibility to members in the house, is serving as a resource of support to representatives, and above all is ensuring the unity of the body.

What legislation have you sponsored?

This last year, I have sponsored a resolution in support of DACA students on our campus, as well as a resolution that will allow meeting minutes to be posted on Facebook.
