Transparency

Accountability cannot be maintained without a transparent student government that actively works to inform students about how it is serving them. ASOSU has struggled to improve transparency for several years, largely due to the inefficiency of updating the current ASOSU website in a timely manner. While many ASOSU Representatives hold office hours, their office hours and meeting minutes are inaccessible to students on the ASOSU website.

Recently, the House has moved towards using Facebook as a means of improving the communication between students and their representatives. If elected Speaker, I would work with the Senate and Executive Branch to create a website that is easily accessible to students and representatives. I would also increase the presence of representatives by having informational tabling sessions throughout all college departments and cultural centers. While ASOSU does hold monthly town hall meetings in the spirit of transparency, many students are not aware that the ASOSU office is located in the Student Experience Center. As an elected representative, I believe that members of student government should be doing everything within their power to meet students in the spaces that they feel most comfortable in.

Lastly, I believe that transparency can be improved by gathering more information from students about issues they have faced while attending OSU. This would provide representatives with a better understanding of students’ priorities, and consequently improve ASOSU’s legislative process. A way of implementing this is by establishing a task force to gather data from various campus departments, or conducting a survey specific to the House where students can answer questions about what issues matter to them.
